Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, well child visits were postponed, leaving children at risk for vaccine preventable disease. Local healthcare providers are now scheduling well child and immunization visits for all children and adolescents. It is important that all children receive recommended vaccinations and get caught up if they are behind as a result of the pandemic.
Many of you have asked if immunizations are still a requirement for this coming school year. Yes, the WI Department of Health Services continues to follow the WI State Statutes immunization requirement for schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.
How do I know if my child has received all of their vaccinations? You can contact your health care provider or check your child’s records on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR). You can also compare your child’s records with the Center for Disease Control’s 2020 Recommended Vaccination Schedules. For school, a student need only meet the minimum requirements established by the Wisconsin Student Immunization Law (Spanish).
If your child is in need of immunizations; especially if they are entering 4K, Kindergarten or 6th grade in the fall, please schedule an appointment with your primary care provider as soon as possible. If your child is uninsured, has BadgerCare or Medical Assistance, has “major medical insurance” (only covering hospitalization; no preventive care coverage), or is Native American or Alaska Native, the vaccines can be received from the local public health department. For information about public health department immunization clinic schedules only, go to https://www.publichealthmdc.com/disease/immunizations/ or call Public Health Madison-Dane County at 608-266-4821.
In addition, influenza vaccination, which is not required for school attendance, is highly encouraged for all students, staff and families this coming season.
